How much does a website cost in Ethiopia in 2026?
From ETB 8,000 freelance sites to agency projects priced in dollars: what Ethiopian businesses actually pay for a website in 2026, the costs most quotes leave out, and the questions to ask before you pay a deposit.
It's the first question almost every business owner in Addis asks us, and the honest answer is that prices in Ethiopia range from a few thousand birr to well over a million. That range isn't random. It depends on who builds the site, what's actually included, and what you'll keep paying after launch.
This guide sets out what the market looks like in 2026, so you can compare quotes properly — whoever you hire.
What Ethiopian businesses are paying in 2026
These ranges come from public listings, published agency packages and agency directories, checked in October 2026. Dollar prices are converted at about ETB 162 to the dollar.
| Who builds it | Typical price | What you usually get |
|---|---|---|
| Freelancers on listing sites | ETB 8,000 – 25,000 | A template site with your logo and text, often without hosting, SEO or support |
| Local web agencies | ETB 25,000 – 100,000+ | A designed business site, sometimes bundled with hosting or social media setup |
| Agencies pricing in US dollars | $500 – $5,000 (≈ ETB 80,000 – 800,000) | Custom design and development, project management, sometimes ongoing support |
| Online shops and custom systems | ETB 100,000 – 1,000,000+ | Payments, stock, bookings, staff accounts: real software, not just pages |
Two things stand out. First, prices quoted before mid-2024 are now out of date: the birr lost a large share of its value against the dollar when it was floated, and anything priced in or tied to dollars rose with it. Second, the cheapest quote is often not the cheapest website, because of what it leaves out.
The costs most quotes leave out
A low headline price can hide several things you'll pay for later:
- Domain name — your
yourbusiness.comaddress, renewed every year. - Hosting and security certificate — where the site lives, and the padlock that tells browsers it's safe.
- Search setup — page titles, descriptions, a sitemap, Google Search Console and a Google Business Profile. Without these, a new site is very hard to find.
- Content — writing the text and preparing photos. Many quotes assume you'll supply everything, ready to use.
- Amharic — a second language means more design and layout work, not just translated words.
- Payments — accepting Telebirr, Chapa or cards takes real integration work.
- Care after launch — updates, backups, fixes and small changes. Sites that are never maintained break, slow down or get hacked.
An ETB 15,000 site that needs ETB 40,000 of extras over the first year is really an ETB 55,000 site.
What actually drives the price
- Template or custom design. A template is quick and cheap, but looks like thousands of other sites. Custom design is built around your business and customers.
- Number of pages and features. A five-page brochure site is very different from a shop with 200 products and online payments.
- Languages. English and Amharic done properly is real extra work — and usually worth it if your customers read Amharic.
- Who maintains it. Some quotes include a free support period; many end the day the site goes live.
- Ownership. Some providers keep the code, domain or hosting in their own name, which makes it hard to leave later.
Seven questions to ask before you pay a deposit
- Is the design custom, or based on a template?
- Is the domain registered in my name, and who pays to renew it?
- Are hosting and the security certificate included? For how long?
- Will you set up Google Search Console and my Google Business Profile?
- What support is included after launch, and what does it cost afterwards?
- Who owns the code, design files and content at the end?
- Is the price fixed in writing, and how is payment split?
If the answers are vague, the quote isn't really a price.
How we price at SHIF Studio
We're an Addis Ababa studio, and we decided not to compete on being the cheapest. Instead, we include what others charge extra for. Every website we build is custom-designed and comes with search and Google Business setup, your first year's domain, hosting set up for you, and a free care period after launch. The price is fixed in a written quote, paid in stages, and you own everything at the end.
Our current starting prices in birr are on our Ethiopia page, and you can see what we've built for businesses like Kaph Coffee and Hebrew Trading in our work.
If you're comparing quotes, we're happy to look at yours and tell you honestly what's missing. Send us a short brief and you'll get a written scope and price within five days.
